TeXworks

A simple interface for working with TeX documents. TeXworks has 3 repositories available. Follow their code on GitHub. TeXworks is a free and simple working environment for authoring TeX (LaTeX, ConTeXt and XeTeX) documents. Inspired by Dick Koch's award-winning TeXShop program for Mac OS X, it makes entry into the TeX world easier for those using desktop operating systems other than OS X.

Templates and SampleFiles

TeXworks is a project with the effort to build a simple TeX front-end program (working environment) that will be available for all today's major desktop operating systems.

Listed below are some basic templates and sample files that Laura wrote. Aside from the sample files written specifically for this talk and website, the other files contain examples of what you can do with TeX. Some of them are old, some of them are hack jobs, but they all work andare meant to illustrate different features of TeX.

Important: Please consult the Readmepage first as it explains what we've got on this page.

If you have any questions about the files on this page, or if you have any files that you would like to contribute and have made publicly available, please email Michael.

The Beginning

Always a good place to start...

  • A Simple Sample LaTeX File [.ps][.tex]
  • Basic Font Tables [.ps] [.tex]
Basic Instructional Templates

There are three templates available. They detail just the basics typicallyincluded in a lab quiz, gateway or exam. The three templates each requiretestpoints.tex.

  • Quiz Template [.ps] [.tex]
  • Gateway Template [.ps] [.tex]
  • Exam Template [.ps] [.tex](requires graph.eps)
testpoints.tex is an input file designed to ease the creation of problems, parts and point counting. Its counterpart, notestpoints.tex, doesthe same thing except it does not print the point value of each question.

  • notestpoints.tex (Courtesy of Laura Taalman)
Calendars

Included are three templates for making monthly calendars. Theseare great for long term lesson planning.

  • Monthly Calendar Shell [.ps] [.tex]
  • Monthly Calendar Template [.ps][.tex]
  • Weekly Lab/Lecture Planner [.ps][.tex]
Instructional Sample FilesWindows

Here are some sample files that you might use for a typical Math 26Lcourse.

  • Class Policy [.ps] [.tex]
  • Test I [.ps] [.tex](requires lighthouse.eps)
  • Lab Quiz [.ps] [.tex] (requires file riemann.eps)
The sample files in this section require the input file lauracode.tex. This file contains many of Laura's personalized (La)TeX commands and areused frequently in the above .tex files.Ph.D. Stuff

Here are some sample files that comprise part of Laura's dissertation. (The Big Diagram is awesome TeXing!)

  • <1% Done [.ps] [.tex]
  • 4% Done [.ps] [.tex]
  • The Big Diagram [.ps] [.tex]
The files in this section require the input files lauracode.tex and lauracodePHD.texBIBTeX

Included is a sample file to illustrate the use of BiBTeX with a LaTeXdocument. See the Readmepage for more info.

There is also a BIBTeX template which contains some of the lesser usedentry types (such as @conference and @phdthesis).TeXworksOverhead Slides

Texworks Linux

One of LaTeX's document classes is slides. This class allows youto create overhead slides that can be printed or photocopied onto transparenciesfor use in a seminar or presentation. Here is a short paper and theslides that are based on it.

  • Original Paper [.ps] [.tex][.bib]
  • Presentation Slides [.ps] [.tex]
Letters

LaTeX also includes the letter document class. Here are two letterstypeset in LaTeX. The FOIA letter illustrates the use of a mail merge.

  • FOIA [.ps] [.tex]
  • Telemarketers [.ps] [.tex]
There is a nice Duke letterhead TeX file on the acpub system. It,and some other useful files, are located in the /usr/local/lib/texmf/tex/latex2e/duke/directory on the acpub system (NOT on math).

Other Uses of LaTeX

  • Curriculum Vita [.ps] [.tex]
  • Detailed Personal Expense Worksheet [.ps][.tex]
